A minor version bump (+0.01) has been applied to all CALIPSO data products due to a required upgrade to the operating system on the CALIPSO production cluster. All algorithms were re-compiled to process in this new environment with no change to the underlying science algorithms or inputs.


Introduction

This document provides a description and preliminary quality assessment of the Level 2 IIR/Lidar Swath product DP2.2B, as described in Section 2.19 of the CALIPSO Data Product Catalog PC-SCI-203 Release 4.92.

The IIR swath product reports the swath brightness temperatures measured in the three IIR channels (8.65, 10.60, and 12.05 μm).

The other primary variables, namely a scene classification, effective emissivity in each IIR channel, cloud effective diameter (De), and ice or liquid water path are retrieved under the CALIOP track and propagated to the IIR swath using radiative homogeneity criteria (Garnier et al., 2012). For pixels outside the track, the retrievals originate from the most similar neighboring track pixel. If no similar pixel is found, no parameters are reported. Please refer to the description of the IIR/Lidar Track product for description of the track parameters.

  • CALIPSO IIR Level 1B product DP1.2, version V2.00.
  • CALIPSO Lidar Level 2, 5 km Cloud and Aerosols layer product DP2.1A, version V4.20.
  • CALIPSO WFC IIR Level 1B product DP1.3, 1 km registered science record, version V3.xx.
  • MERRA 2 atmospheric profiles (same as CALIOP) and surface temperature.
  • IGBP (International Geosphere/Biosphere Program) surface type and AFWA (Air Force Weather Agency) snow/ice index (same as in CALIOP products).


Output Summary:

IIR/Lidar swath product, version V4.20, named after the CALIPSO Lidar Level 2 product.
